New Music | Sia

Where do you go after helping to create a seminal album like Zero 7's 'Simple Things'? Further along your own little solo journey, apparently. A few years down the line (almost 10 as it goes, which is pretty scary) and Sia Furler is still making great music. Which is nice to know. Its taken her a while but the fame seems to be rolling in for Sia, so I hope she's enjoying it.

New Music | Maika Makovski

Hitting NMB fave venue The Troubadour next Thursday 11th March is this lovely lady Maika Makovski. So what is lava love? Who cares, she's fit. With a somewhat Scandinavian sound to it (so obviously we love it), I'm not surprised she's also booked in for SXSW this year. Better book some tickets.

New Music | And So I Watch You From Afar

I always maintained I wanted 'Burn Girl Prom Queen' by Mogwai played at my funeral. Now I'm properly old I'm reconsidering. Either way, And So I Watch You From Afar fill a nice gap Mogwai left after the glory days of CODY, that I felt Kyuss never did. A bit heavy, a bit Monday Morning, but quality guitars and we've all missed those guitars haven't we. I mean not that Owl City aren't absolutely superb of course -Hoosiers have really got something to worry about.

New Music | Florence And The Machine

Not a huge fan of Florence et la machine to be brutally honest but there is something about this track, and I've been meaning to post it for as many days as Florence says 'like' in interview. So about 6 months. There is absolutely no chance in hell you haven't heard this, but enjoy nonetheless.

Hoorah! Good music! And from Delphic, who'd have thought. Underachievers in recent history, Acolyte is a therefore surprising must have album. Particularly having moved from Kitsuné to a major imprint, Polydor. I could have been more imaginative than posting the single, but deal with it.

Gone with a straight up Top SIX this year. None of this Top Ten business, it's twenty ten for christ's sake.

 3. The Twelves finally broke through into our sunny climes recently with their Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1. That made me a happy boy. Look out for more this year. The below is ancient but what can you do, no major label, no sexy videos.

4. Miami Horror's been doing the rounds in the back half of twenty oh nine, and for good reasons. Video's pretty pony, but the tune's a keeper.

5. These guys worked their way into our Ones To Watch basically by default. Ticking all the 'up & coming' boxes on 09, even if not in the UK, they'll be on 'da scene' this year, just you wait and see.

Alas, dear friends, for I fear little Phoenix may have squeezed into the mainstream. And Animal Collective? Really? Maybe we're safe for another year, I don't know. Anyway bonjour and welcome to le top 10 for 2009 as dictated by NMB. No Grizzly Bear, no thanks. No Kasabian, no thanks. Just pure 2009 style quality, a vintage year that competes strongly with 2008.
